It can be incredibly annoying finding a recipe that only has it’s ingredients in cups or only grams. Thankfully there are calculators and conversion tables to help, which is what I made here! This page is meant to cover a wide variety of ingredients and their common measurements to help in baking or cooking. 

Grams to Cups Conversion and Why They Differ

Some people may be wondering, why does the ingredient matter, wont 1 cup always equal the same amount in grams? The answer is no, different ingredients come with different densities and will also not always be able to equally fill up the space in a measuring cup. 

As a rule of thumb though, for dry goods roughly 128g equals 1 cup.

How to Fill a Measuring Cup

It seems silly because the first thing you think is, “just put the stuff in the cup”. But, filling a cup matters, especially if its a powdered ingredient. For example, scooping flour out of a bag and skimming the top until it’s flat is one way to do it.

Then you have to wonder if that’s what the recipe writer intended, or did they pack the flour into the cup before adding more? The difference between an unpacked cup and packed can be as much as a 50% difference in grams!

So, it’s important to know how to fill a measuring cup and ensure you do it the same as the original recipe.

Using Grams or Cups for Baking?

Another reason on why it’s good to know the conversions from cups to grams, is because a lot of baking should be done with precision. Knowing exactly how many grams you’re using is a lot more important than knowing in cups, tbsps, or tsps. Anyone who’s tried to bake knows that a little difference in measurement makes the world of difference!

Not Everything Fits Evenly Into a Cup

Keep in mind that not every ingredient you’ll use will fit evenly in a cup. Certain things like nuts or chocolate chips will leave air gaps when filled into the cup. This can’t really be helped, but it is something you should be aware of because the measurements won’t also be exactly the same.

How Many Tablespoons Are in a Cup?

The number of times I ask myself how many somethings are in something else in the kitchen is uncountable. Most of the time I’m trying to scale a recipe up or down, that’s when conversions are the most useful.

If you’re only curious of how many tablespoons make up exactly 1 cup, the answer is 16 tablespoons.

However, I’ve compiled a chart below of other common tablespoon to cup measurements if you need to scale.

So if you’re like me and struggle with conversions, then this chart should be perfect! I’ve put together a list of common conversions between tablespoons and cups to help scaling or converting in your recipe in the paragraphs below. 

Different Measurements From Around The Globe

Are all measurements created equal? Depending on where you are and the standards for measurement, a cup might not be the same as somewhere else.

For example, the 1 US Legal Cup doesn’t even equal 1 US Cup. They’re in the same country but still two separate standards are used in regards to measurement.

The differences are below and while they aren’t drastically different, if you were baking the measurement differences would matter.

The US Customary System (USCS)

  • 1 US Cup = 236.588 mL
  • 1 US Cup = 16 US tablespoons (tablespoon)
  • 1 US Cup = 15.77 metric tablespoons (UK, international)

The US Legal Cup (used for nutrition labeling per FDA)

  • 1 US Legal Cup = 240 mL
  • 1 US Legal Cup = 16.2307 US tablespoons (tablespoon)
  • 1 US Legal Cup = 16 metric tablespoons (UK, international)

Metric Cup & Imperial Cup

  • 1 metric cup (international) = 250 mL
  • 1 imperial cup = 284.131 mL
  • 1 metric cup (Australia) = 12 Australian tablespoons

Measuring Liquids

Measurements for liquids is different than measuring solids. You should always opt for cups or liters when measuring liquids. 

The reason why it’s also easy to rely on volume as a measurement for liquids is because there isn’t much discrepancy. A liquid will always fill up 1 cup worth of itself the same. 

The alternative is solids which don’t always conform the same way. Take a substance like sugar, even though it’s a fine substance, there will still always be small gaps between each individual grain. The differences between each time you measure may not be a lot, but it will differ greatly for something like almonds. Another issue is that sometimes a solid may be “packed” or “unpacked” inside the measuring container, making it harder to keep a reliable standard.

Measuring Solids

Taking the measure of a solid is much different than a liquid, and a measurement such as grams or weight should be preferred over volume. 

I mentioned above why, but to reiterate, solids can have gaps between the particles in the measuring cup. The only way to ensure the same measurement of ingredient each time, is to use weight or mass (grams). 

Summary

To sum up, there are 16 tablespoons in a cup. However, I hope the chart helps if you need to scale your recipe or have other measurement conversions.

What Are Artichokes?

An artichoke is an immature flower bud of a thistle. If you’re not sure what a thistle is, it’s any plant categorized by having leaves with sharp prickles around it. The artichoke is considered a vegetable and should be treated as one when planning out your dishes. If you do plan on adding artichokes to your cookbook, then I’d recommend learning how to properly prepare them as it’s not easy. 

Different parts of the artichoke are edible, such as the base of the leaves and the innermost leaves which are more tender. Underneath the leaves is the choke, and beneath that is the heart, the meatiest part of the plant.

Originally, the artichoke comes from the Mediterranean regions of Europe and is considered one of the world’s oldest foods. Currently, artichokes are available all over from the U.S., France, Italy, and Spain.

Artichokes have a very distinguishable appearance that look like a flower waiting to bloom. 

The common color you’ll find them in is a solid green but like the picture above, they do temporarily have a reddish hue in some areas.

It can be difficult to describe how something tastes, especially from one stranger to another over the internet. The main difficulty is because we all have different tastes and might not even have the same basis for comparison, regardless I’ll give it a shot!

The most relatable taste that comes to mind is that of asparagus. The taste isn’t very strong and there’s a slight sweetness with a tinge of tangy flavor.  It also shares similarities with other green vegetables like broccoli and brussels sprouts. Despite the similarities, it still has a distinct taste of it’s own that you’ll notice right away. 

The taste is definitely unique and I suggest giving it a try yourself! You’ll never fully know what an artichoke tastes like unless you try it yourself!

Artichokes come with a load of healthy benefits. The plant is low in fat while being rich in numerous nutrients and antioxidants. Additionally, a single medium sized artichoke will have roughly 7 grams of fiber (almost 1/4 of the referenced daily intake). 

An artichoke is surprisingly low in calories as well if you’re looking for a vegetable that is full of healthy nutrients but will also be helpful if you’re on a diet. 

On top of the healthy nutrients, some studies have shown that artichokes have a very positive effect on cholesterol. Artichokes have been show to lower LDL (bad) cholesterol while simultaneously increasing HDL (good) cholesterol.

The original Jolly Rancher Hard Candies are Halal according to the ingredients but Hershey has stated they are not Halal certified. Also, many of their other products are not Halal even looking at their ingredients. I would be cautious venturing into other candies from the company as they vary in their production. 

There may be numerous reasons Jolly Ranchers are not Halal as there are unknowns regarding their production. They may be made in ways that do not confine to Islamic law, making them questionable to consume. 

As Hershey has directly stated that they are not Halal certified, it’s probably best to avoid them even if they may turn out to be Halal later. 

What Are Jolly Ranchers Made of?

Jolly Rancher candies are made by mixing a solution of corn syrup, sucrose, glucose, and fructose syrup that is boiled to a temp of 320F. So if you were ever wondering why they’re so sweet, it’s because they’re basically just sugar.

While raw sugar that hasn’t undergone any whitening will most likely be Halal, some sugar is Haram because of how it’s made. For example, animal bone is sometimes used in producing sugar and if the animal wasn’t slaughtered in a way that makes it Halal, then it will obviously be Haram. This may be another reason Jolly Ranchers aren’t Halal certified, because we don’t know about the production of sugar they use.

Are Jolly Ranchers Gluten Free?

Jolly Ranchers have not been fully evaluated to be officially classified as gluten-free. However, the company claims that the candies are not made using any gluten-containing ingredients. 

So, if you want to trust the company producing Jolly Ranchers then according to them they are safe to eat!

How To Cook A Turkey Breast in a Roaster Oven

There are a lot of aspects that encompass how to properly cook a turkey breast in a roaster oven. The gist is after all of your appropraite seasonings and preparation for the turkey (including stuffing), then it’s best to treat it as you would cooking in a normal oven. The rule of thumb at 350F is to cook the turkey for 15-17 minutes for every pound of the turkey. 

Also, most cooking times include about 30 minutes near the end to cook the turkey uncovered. While this is a great rule of thumb, you might not need to depending on your roaster oven. The reason it’s uncovered is to cook the skin and make it nice and brown. That same effect won’t be achieved if you’re using a roaster oven. 

Should You Put Water in the Bottom of a Roaster Oven?

The purpose of a roaster oven is to roast, not steam. So, putting water in the bottom of the pan defeats the purpose and won’t be necessary to keep the meat moist as it will be basted often. 

Do You Cook a Turkey Covered or Uncovered?

Generally you want to keep a turkey covered with a lid or foil while it cooks to ensure it doesn’t dry out and uncover when the turkey is almost done. You should also baste the turkey every half hour or so to help keep it moist in addition to the cover. After the turkey is almost done, uncover it to let the skin cook and thoroughly brown. 

Should You Cook a Turkey at 325F or 350F?

The general range to cook a turkey is between 325 and 350, but there’s no specific standard as every oven/roaster will be slightly different. Cooking at a lower temperature will take longer than at a higher temperature. But, if you cook the turkey at too high of a temperature, the meat will dry out. That being said, I prefer to start at the lowest (325F in this case) and work my way up next time if it took too long or didn’t cook thoroughly. 

How Many Minutes Per Pound do you Cook a Turkey?

The general rule of thumb is you should cook a turkey for 15 to 17 minutes per pound when cooking.

Summary

Cooking a turkey in a roaster oven is a great alternative to the traditional method of a standard oven. That being said you should make sure to cook at no more than 350F and not put any water in the pan.

Tobiko and Masago themselves are gluten free. However, some commercially made Tobiko are made with soy sauce, rice vinegar, and other ingredients that may contain gluten. Be wary of how the Tobiko is prepared as it may use additives that aren’t gluten free, despite the main ingredient being a gluten free sushi roll. 

What is Tobiko?

Tobiko is the Japanese word for flying fish roe, which is mainly used in different types of sushi. If you didn’t know, fish roe is just another way of saying fish eggs. These eggs are normally a orangish color, but different ingredients and spices are added to change the color and taste. For example, sometimes yuzu is added to make the eggs appear more yellow and squid ink is sometimes used to make them black. 

As Tobiko is simply a fish egg, the main ingredient is gluten free. But as mentioned earlier, it’s preparation with other ingredients may change the overall dish.

This question will be met with some yes’s and some no’s as it’s opinion based. While there are some downsides to Tobiko, the overall composition of Tobiko can be healthy. 

These fish eggs have a lot of protein and omega-3 fatty acids. In addition to it’s high protein content, Tobiko contains phospholipids that help to protect the heart and provide numerous health benefits such as reducing inflammation and improved cognitive ability. 

However, there are downside to Tobiko, such as being high in cholesterol. This isn’t much of an issue for most as Tobiko is usually served in small amounts.

What makes a food Kosher?

Kosher means that a food or drink is allowed to be eaten according to Jewish dietary law. It’s not a type of cooking like some may believe, it’s a collection of laws that are very strict about certain types of food, the way they’re prepared, and the way they’re processed. 

The laws themselves are complex but focus around three main categories for food, meat, dairy, and “pareve”. Kosher meat comes from split hooved animals that chew their curd (partially digested food that returns from the stomach). Dairy products have to come from a Kosher animal and be prepared with ingredients and equipment that is also Kosher. Finally, Pareve is the category for foods that aren’t meat or dairy, such as eggs, vegetables, fish, coffee, and more.
