Are Potato Chips Low In Histamine?

The answer to whether potato chips are low in histamine or not will depend on a few factors. While yes, plain unflavored potato chips made from only potatoes are low in histamine. However, not all potato chips are created equal!

Since potatoes are low in histamine, then potato chips should be low in histamine as well. But, there are plenty of potato chip brands and flavors that may alter their cooking process. For example, if potato chips are made in and cooked in oil, they may alter how they react with your body and create an allergic effect you might be sensitive to.

On top of how they are cooked, different ingredients may make a normal potato chip that was low histamine, into a high histamine treat if certain herbs and spices are added. 

So, a homemade potato chip that wasn’t made in oil should be low in histamine. But keep in mind when buying another brand of chip that they may not be and you should check each brand!

Are Potato Chips High In Potassium?

When people think of foods full of potassium, the first food they think of is usually bananas. What many people don’t know, is that potatoes generally have a higher amount of potassium than bananas (if you compare one fruit to one potato). 

One banana has around 425mg of potassium per banana. Meanwhile, one potato has around 925mg of potassium per potato. So yes, potatoes do have a high potassium content!

Histamine levels can be hard to determine in foods, but they play a major role in many of the body’s systems.

While your body produces histamine on its own, the chemical can also be found in numerous foods. The level at which it’s created in your body when consuming certain foods determines if a food is low or high in histamine. 

Most people on a low histamine diet are doing so because they have an increased sensitivity to histamine. 

Are Potato Chips Keto?

Anyone who’s on a keto diet is aware of the high amount of carbs in potatoes. Well, because the main ingredient of potato chips is so high in carbs, it means their by-product of chips is also high in carbs. Anything high in carbohydrates is sadly not welcome on the keto diet!

So, the chances are that most potato chips you’ll come across won’t be keto and should be avoided if you’re on a low-carb diet. 

Do Potato Chips Cause Inflammation?

Potato chips are usually prepared in an unhealthy vegetable oil and filled with salt (sodium). Both of these are factors likely to cause bodily inflammation. Those are just two factors that are in involved in the production of most potato chips, there may be additional herbs, spices, and flavorings that make them more prone to inflammation.
